Show Notes

This year-end episode of The News in Brief Podcast captures all the mistakes and outtakes from 2024.

Host and news reporter Charlotte Goldstone, The Loadstar publisher Alex Lennane and The Loadstar managing editor Gavin van Marle have given you a year of concise and timely supply-chain news summaries, but this compilation of outtakes reveals the laughs, frustrations and canine interruptions that were had behind-the-scenes.

Like any good blooper reel, this 11-minute podcast contains lots of swearing which some audiences may find offensive – you have been warned!

The Loadstar Podcast News in Brief will now be on a ‘brief’ hiatus until Mondy 6 January but be sure to join us in the new year as the best way to catch up on all you’ve missed over the holiday.

[00:00:06] Speaker A: Good morning and welcome to Good Morning and I'm so sorry. If you were looking forward to a roundup of last week's supply chain news, you're going to have to do it the old fashioned way and go back through and read all of the lonestart articles from last week. Instead, I have put together a year end roundup of the News in Brief podcasts, outtakes and bloopers. And there have been a lot of. So if you're new here and this is the first episode you've listened to, this is probably not a good place to start. And I promise you that what you're about to hear does not represent us or our journalistic capabilities. It's just a bit of fun. But I should add that like any good blooper reel, this does contain a lot of swearing. So if you don't like swearing, then I would turn this episode off right now. You have been warned. Unfortunately, this is the last News and Brief podcast until the new year. So enjoy it, rest up, have a great Christmas. To those who celebrate, I will see you in January. Well, without further ado, here is the blooper reel of 2024. Canadian Industrial Relations Board CIRB from now on. And the CR. It's harder to say than the longer one. All eyes are on the crib. The cirb. Brexit is a bedlam. [00:01:29] Speaker B: What was your Brexit? Board of Bedlam costing Britain billions. [00:01:34] Speaker A: Yeah, Brexit. It's not going well. And last month we reported that Flexport was involved in an FMC court case against GT Tyres and they were actually the plaintiff. Is that right? [00:01:47] Speaker B: Is it Gitty Ty? [00:01:49] Speaker A: Last month we reported that Flexport had taken one of its customers, Giddy Tires, to the FMC courtroom. [00:01:56] Speaker B: Is it an FMC courtroom? It's not an FMC courtroom. Is it just to start again. Sorry, mate, sorry. [00:02:04] Speaker A: And last month. [00:02:09] Speaker C: Which lost its right to entry type 86, which is parcels below the Demon. Sorry. But you recently did a story on Q4, isn't that right? [00:02:21] Speaker A: Trying to do that again. [00:02:24] Speaker C: But you recently did a story on the fourth quarter. Are you hearing it's going to still be strong? [00:02:30] Speaker A: Yeah. Do you want to. [00:02:37] Speaker C: But you recently did a story on the fourth corset. This is another interesting case, but a bit of a sadder one. So, private equity group. For fuck's sake. [00:02:49] Speaker A: Is it called Ten Oaks Group? [00:02:51] Speaker C: Ten Oaks. Thank you. Well, this is another interesting case, but a bit of a sadder one. So, private equity company Ten Oaks Group bought Ford Air Solutions, but they told the LODESTAR last week that. Oh, for sake. I just can't. [00:03:16] Speaker A: Some great stuff for the river. [00:03:19] Speaker C: And speaking of leaking. Charlotte, I'm. I understand that you have been all right. And speaking of. Okay, speaking of messy companies. I understand, but not everything is Rosy the same company. [00:03:46] Speaker B: Fuck. [00:03:46] Speaker C: Sorry. I mean, you're going to an e. Commerce conference this. [00:03:54] Speaker B: Okay, so we've made the caveat that we're recording this whole. For fuck's sake, Rob. You'll be sent out if you don't. Don't stop wagging your. [00:04:05] Speaker C: Just lie down, Rob. Lie down. Lie down. Good boy. [00:04:10] Speaker B: Wait. Right. [00:04:12] Speaker A: Yeah, well, I went to Billund in Denmark, for fuck's sake. [00:04:19] Speaker B: Is it going okay? Because the White House said we're not going to invoke the Taft hat yet. Chicken noodle soup. We're not going to invoke the Taft heart. The Taft Hartley Act. We're not going to invoke the white Taft. Okay, Charlie, The White House says we're not the. Oh, come on, Spooner. The White House says we're not going to invoke the Taft Hartley act. [00:05:08] Speaker C: Taft. [00:05:08] Speaker B: It's a Taft. [00:05:10] Speaker C: Why was it so funny? Just how ridiculous. [00:05:15] Speaker B: The White House says we're not going to invoke the Taft Hartley Act. What would be their normal lead time in these sort of scenarios? What would. [00:05:25] Speaker C: Oh, I can't tell you the answer to that. So it depends on the. It's really complex. I can tell you the answer. [00:05:32] Speaker B: It's quite. It's quite the thing. Yeah. So. Mr. Soft. Mr. Soft. Mr. To Mr. Soft. It sounds like he's one of the Mr. Men, doesn't it? Mr. Toff? [00:05:47] Speaker A: So what did he say about this? [00:05:48] Speaker B: So it wasn't so much. He didn't really focus so much on. Well, he did, actually. I mean, so. So you're gonna have to edit that. [00:05:58] Speaker C: I mean that, you know, China plus one. Vietnam has been a strong. [00:06:04] Speaker B: Beneficiary. [00:06:06] Speaker A: What does that say? [00:06:07] Speaker B: What does that say? [00:06:09] Speaker A: Looks like a rude word. [00:06:11] Speaker B: No, no, no, no. This one. This one. [00:06:12] Speaker A: No, the one after Durban. [00:06:14] Speaker B: Durban case. [00:06:15] Speaker A: Oh, okay. [00:06:16] Speaker B: I think it says. [00:06:16] Speaker A: Oh, that looks like an N and a T after Durban. It looks like it. [00:06:20] Speaker B: Oh, right. Oh, I see, Right. All the anecdotes around people being price gouged by their suppliers and all this sort of stuff. [00:06:28] Speaker C: You know, air quotes don't work on podcasts. [00:06:32] Speaker B: Air quotes. [00:06:33] Speaker C: You're gonna use the word price gouge. No one's gonna know that you put that in brackets. [00:06:36] Speaker B: Maybe you take out price gouge. Open air quote, price gouge close. Air quote. [00:06:43] Speaker A: So cma, CGM finally close deal to take a joint. [00:06:47] Speaker B: It's not really a closing. I mean that was that. That was. They haven't closed it. They've announced that they've agreed to. Yes, sorry, the 49 per stake. [00:06:56] Speaker A: 49 per stake. [00:06:58] Speaker B: 49% stake. [00:07:00] Speaker A: So do you think there is going to be much interest there? [00:07:04] Speaker B: Alex does. You're interested, are you? [00:07:10] Speaker C: No, I did the story on it. [00:07:11] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, go on. [00:07:13] Speaker C: But as it stands, things are still bad. [00:07:15] Speaker B: Are they saying that the dropping cargo is due to the labour conflict? Because that's just manifestly false. [00:07:21] Speaker C: Well, it is true. [00:07:22] Speaker B: Well, it's not. The drop in Cargo happened in 2023. [00:07:25] Speaker C: Well, they're saying there's dropping cargo now because shippers are avoiding the Port of Montreal. There was a strike two weeks ago. [00:07:30] Speaker B: No, but I mean they did. They had like a 20 odd percent drop in cargo, but that happened in 2223. This strike action is right at the arse end of when the drop in cargo actually happened. [00:07:41] Speaker C: Oh, do you think you can add that set in the bit where we're arguing and add that, if we can use the word arsent anyway, go. Yeah, leave it in. Gav's arsent. [00:07:52] Speaker A: And how's this comparing with air freight rates? [00:07:55] Speaker C: Well, yeah, it's just time to give air freight a little look in because it's peak season, rates are very high. But they're not going to get high. No. [00:08:03] Speaker B: Okay, thanks for that insight. Brilliant. I'll take that away from you. [00:08:08] Speaker C: Yeah, well, worse still for Canada. It now looks like the west coast is having a big problem. The ILWU Local 514 department, if that's what you call them. [00:08:24] Speaker B: Fuck's sake. [00:08:25] Speaker C: The local ILU. The ILWU local 514 section. What did you tell me to say? [00:08:40] Speaker A: So if you say something like. But what did you make of it? Me belly. [00:08:43] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Okay, got it, got it. So what did you make of this? [00:08:50] Speaker B: We don't know exactly from the outside on which particular aspect of automation this is. Dude, you've got to go rocks. You're not gonna. This isn't gonna. Come on, come on, out you go. Should you do it with a piece of pencil and paper? I know that you're gonna want to ask me about rates. I got nothing to say. [00:09:16] Speaker A: So listen to last week's episode. If you want a recap of this. [00:09:19] Speaker B: Week'S race to go through it. [00:09:21] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:09:23] Speaker A: Now, finally I have to ask you about rates. Has anything interesting happened there? [00:09:27] Speaker B: I mean, not really. Walmart. And Target was extraordinary because it really was a tale of two shippers. Twas the best of times, Twas the worst of times. Can I just do a quick joke? You know, obviously that's a misquote from Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Right. And A Tale of Two Cities was first published in two, two Midlands regional newspapers. Yeah, it was the Bicester Times and the Worcester Times. [00:09:56] Speaker A: I'm gonna edit that out. [00:09:57] Speaker C: That's not. [00:09:58] Speaker A: That is not making the final cut. [00:10:02] Speaker B: Anyway, Target. So it's a tale of two shippers, the best of times and the worst. [00:10:10] Speaker A: And now I'm joined by Alex and Annaine. Hi, Alex. [00:10:12] Speaker C: Hi, Charlotte. So I was about to say. Hi, Alex. Okay. Meanwhile, the air traffic controller asks that the radio freak. For fuck's sake. [00:10:26] Speaker A: Well, moving on to some slightly more positive news. Actually, it's a lot more positive. [00:10:32] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:33] Speaker C: It's made complicated by the first. It's made complicated by the fact that Maersk is not obvious. For fuck's sake. It's. It's made obvious by the. Okay, well, this is made a bit more complex because Maersk is. [00:10:54] Speaker B: And on three of those, the premier alliance will be slot sharing. So where we're going, what happens. Oh, God, this is so hard to explain, isn't it? So you're gonna have to do some skillful editing on this show, as always. [00:11:13] Speaker C: But if you need to know, check all the details on the lowstar.com. [00:11:16] Speaker A: Thank you, Alex. [00:11:19] Speaker C: Do I need to say thelostar.com again?
